It doesn’t matter if you’re an ex-smoker looking to quit smoking, or just curious about vaping and e-cigarettes in general, the following guide will help you learn what you need to know to begin vaping!
E-cigarettes started from a fairly humble beginning. A scientist in China, Hon Lik, designed and produced his first e-cig or cigarillo in 2003. It wasn’t until 2006 that his products exploded across the marketplaces of China, and ever since then the e-cig hasn’t stopped evolving and improving. Like most inventions, the e-cigarette or vaporizer is constantly evolving, what was around last year, or the year before isn’t as good as what’s available now.
The first vaporizers or e-cigarettes were pretty simple affairs, very similar to cigarillos which are still available in convenience stores and gas stations. You can still use pen style vaporizers, and they are the still the simplest and easiest way to make the switch from smoking traditional cigarettes to vaping. Many smokers who quit smoking will try one of the popular ego style beginner’s kits. These beginner’s kits normally consist of an atomizer, tank, two batteries, replacement coils and charging cord.
Don’t be intimidated by vaping anymore!
We all know smoking traditional cigarettes are bad for you unless you have been living under a rock for fifty years, but what you might not know, is how much better for you vaping is than smoking. We aren’t saying that vaping is 100% safe; it simply hasn’t been around long enough for any long-term studies, but we can say that vaping is 95% safer than smoking traditional cigarettes.
95% Safer Than Traditional Cigarettes… Just let that soak in for a minute.
How can we say it’s 95% safer? A recent study by Public Health England concluded that vaping was at least 95 times safer than smoking traditional cigarettes. There were also several other interesting things which they reported;
44.8% of people don’t realize that vaping is safer than smoking
There is no evidence to support that vaping is a gateway for smoking for children
There're some interesting numbers for you to think about! Unfortunately, vaping or e-cigarettes have been victim to some mistruths and blatant lies, we aren’t going to jam this down your throat anymore, the link is above if you would like to read the full report for yourself. All we are going to say is keep an open mind, do your own research, read some articles and form your own educated opinions!
How Do E-cigs or Vaporizers Work?
Your basic e-cig or vaporizer is really a quite simple piece of equipment, which once you pull it apart, and learn how to use, will make you wonder what all the fuss was about! Your basic e-cig is the pen or tube style vaporizer. These are the most common styles of vaporizers, affordable, easy to use, and convenient to carry around with you.
Basic Ego Style Vaporizer
Battery – This has an ego threading which screws onto your charger. This is also where you screw your tank or clearomizer onto.
Clearomizer – This is the tank where your e-juice or e-liquid is stored. This is also where your atomizer or coil is located.
Mouthpiece – This is the tip of your tank or clearomizer, where you inhale the vapor.
Charger – USB charger which can run off of a USB port or mains power. This has a screw thread on one end to screw into your clearomizer.
That’s it! Not a lot to them, they generally last a day or so before you need to recharge, depending on how much you use them. You clearomizer, or tank is where you fill your e-liquid. It has a central tube, be careful to avoid pouring your e-liquid or e-juice into this as it will then leak into your mouth. When you unscrew the base of your tank or clearomizer, you’ll find a metal atomizer or coil, this is what heats the e-liquid and turns it into vapor. Your atomizer has wicking which absorbs the e-liquid which is then heated to a vapor. The atomizer is removable in some clearomizers, allowing you to replace the coil. Coils generally last a few weeks, also dependent on how much you use them.
Once you are comfortable with the basic vaporizers, you can then look at trying out advanced types of vaporizers, such as, box mods, sub-ohm mods, Genesis mods, etc. all of which produce more power, and bigger clouds of vaper! Understanding how to build your own mods and coils is a more detailed and complicated procedure, it is recommended that you don’t start until you have a good understanding of vaping and the electrical experience to build and modify your own components.
What is E-liquid or E-juice?
E-liquid or E-juice is the liquid which you vape inside your e-cigarette or vaporizer. This is the liquid that turns to vapor and then is inhaled by you. E-liquid is available in thousands of different flavors and strengths. Popular flavors include fruits, candy, desserts, cigarette and tobacco, as well as drinks like soft drinks, coffees, etc. all of which are produced around the world.
What Are the Ingredients Inside Your E-juice?
Unlike traditional cigarettes which have over 4,500 ingredients, e-liquid only has five! Most of the time it’s only four.
PG – This is Propylene Glycol. This is one of the main components of e-liquid along with VG. PG is already in use in many medicinal products and is responsible for giving you a bigger throat hit, like that from traditional cigarettes. PG is also a thinner liquid, with no flavor, which makes it a great base for e-liquids.
VG – This is Vegetable Glycerin. This is a plant based substance with a slight taste and is much thicker than PG. The majority of e-liquids available contain either a 30/70, 50/50, or 70/30 PG to VG ratio.
Nicotine – This is optional and available in a variety of different strengths, normally 0mg – 18mg. How much nicotine you choose depends on how much you smoked before you started vaping. Heavy smokers should start with a strong level of nicotine in their e-liquid, lowering it as they become less dependent on it. Many vapers have had success quitting smoking completely by slowly lowering the level of the nicotine over approximately 12-24 months.
Flavor – This is where e-liquids get fun! Choosing flavors for many people becomes an obsession. Cheaper the e-liquid, generally the poorer the flavor, but feel free to shop around and try a few suppliers and flavors. Start with the small 30 ml bottles until you’re sure that you like the flavor.
Water – This is generally only used to thin out e-liquids or even out mixes.
Now that you know what vaping is, where vaping began, a few facts about vaping and how it all works, you’re ready to get out and try it for yourself! There are some great beginners kits available which are perfect for people who are looking to try vaping, but not sure if it’s for them.
